It’s hot here in Florida today and I’m hiding out in the air conditioning, planning on doing some heavy duty work on a new story. There’s no sense in going outside; it’s just too steamy.
This morning I found I’d received an interesting comment on this blog from a skateboarder named Jeff, age fifteen, in Alberquerque, NM. I found it touching and I thought I would share portions of it with all of you. Jeff said:
“I have skated for about six years. I’m straight. My best friend Jacob also skates. Last weekend Jacob told me he is gay. I was totally shocked. He’s never done anything to make me think he was gay. I didn’t know what to say ’cause I don’t know much about gay people. I told Jacob I was okay with him being gay, but I guess he could tell I was kind of uncomfortable and he suggested I have a look at your blog.
“The past couple of days I looked over your posts about gay skateboarders. I’m kind of surprised there are so many gay skateboarders out there. It made me do some thinking. I called Jacob yesterday and told him he was still my best friend and that would never change.
“My family is taking a trip to California this summer and my parents invited Jacob to go with us. This was a while back. Yesterday I told Jacob that I still expected him to go with us, that I was totally okay with it, and he sounded relieved. I think everythings’ okay between us now.”
Thanks for writing, Jeff. You sound like a very sweet guy.
Okay, other than writing I have very little on my plate today, and that’s fine with me. I hope everyone has a good Thursday, wherever you are.
