A real skater versus a poseur skater. How to tell the difference?

Hi, friends and readers:

If you follow this site, then you know it’s a spot where gay skateboarders often sound off about their subculture and the homophobia they encounter there. I always enjoy hearing from gay skaters. Most are bright young men and total nonconformists.

When I saw the photo online yesterday, however, it made me want to puke. Would anyone believe for one moment the kid in the photo is a genuine skater. He looks like a model in a department store add. No self-respecting skater, straight or gay, would be caught dead in those clothes, I assure you. And that skateboard looks like it hasn’t even been used on the street.

True skaters eschew fashion. They tend to be skinny and scruffy, and they don’t always bathe regularly. They never style their hair like the kid in the photo above.

Here’s what a real skater looks like. Does he look like a model in a fashion ad? Nah, of course not.

It’s been a normal Monday for me. I wrote for a while this morning, after my beach walk. After lunch, I visited the YMCA for a workout and lap-swimming, followed by a visit to the driving range. The temperature at the range was so hot, I left before hitting all the balls I’d paid for. I can’t wait for cool weather to come next month.

Have a nice Monday evening, everyone.
