It’s been a while since I’ve heard from any gay BMXers out there, but two days ago I heard from a guy named Rick. He didn’t say where he was from.
Rick read a earlier comment from another gay BMXer named Sean who’d experienced homophobia in the Tulsa BMX community, after moving there from Chicago, where he was “out” to his fellow BMXers. Here’s the link to Sean’s comment:
And here’s what Rick had to say to Sean:
“Wow, I think its great you came out so young. I was a pro-bmx-freestyle rider in the AFA contests, back in the 80s. It was hard to come out to my peers back then. Today the secret is out and most of my old buddies and new friends I meet today are cool with the gay thing. Good luck with biking and your life. It was just really nice to read this article about you. You rock.”
I have never visited a BMX track, nor have I ever attended a BMX competition. I don’t know much about the sport, but I know its devotees are passionate about this particular style of cycling. Also, it seems to attract its fair share of gay boys/men. I wonder why?
Yesterday evening, I came down with a sore throat and a cough. I slept okay last night, but this morning I’m feeling somewhat crappy. I canceled an appointment in town for this afternoon, and I won’t visit the YMCA today. I’ll lay low in the house until this situation clears up. I have plenty to do in the writing department, so I won’t be bored, believe me.
Have a nice Wednesday, friends.
