Best friends sharing life and a nice Walt Whitman poem ….

Hi, friends and readers:

Every guy in his teens and twenties deserves to have a best friend to share his days with. My best friend’s name was Curtis. I met him when I was thirteen, and we became inseparable. We even roomed together at the University of Florida. Curtis wasn’t gay. Our friendship did not involve sex. We just enjoyed each other’s company, and we loved to laugh.

Two days ago, I posted a photo of two boys on the bow of a sailboat. One boy was holding the other’s waist. You could tell from the photo that the two were best of friends. In response, my friend John sent me the following poem by Walt Whitman who, of course, was gay at a time when homosexuality was verboten. I love Whitman’s poem. Thanks again for sharing, John.

WE TWO BOYS TOGETHER CLINGING

by Walt Whitman

We two boys together clinging,
One the other never leaving,
Up and down the roads going, North and South excursions making,
Power enjoying, elbows stretching, fingers clutching,
Arm’d and fearless, eating, drinking, sleeping, loving,
No law less than ourselves owning, sailing, soldiering, thieving, threatening,
Misers, menials, priests alarming, air breathing, water drinking,
on the turf or the sea beach dancing,
Cities wrenching, ease scorning, statutes mocking, feebleness chasing,
Fulfilling our foray.

I rose at 7:30 AM this morning, and I walked three miles on the beach before the day got too warm. Conditions were still and humid down there, but I enjoyed my walk. A group of dolphins was chasing a pod of bait fish, which was lots of fun to watch.

I took a swim in the Gulf after my walk, and then returned to my house to shower on my patio. I brewed coffee and made a simple breakfast, and then I got to work writing fresh material for my novel-in-progress, now at 30,500 words and chugging right along.

Now it’s 11:15, and I am done writing for the day. In a half-hour or so I’ll have a quick lunch, and then I’ll drive into the city to visit the YMCA for a workout and lap-swimming session. I’ll hit the supermarket on the way home, and maybe I’ll pick up some fresh fish for my dinner.

Have a great Wednesday, friends. Keep smiling. 🙂
