I spent a few hours at the laptop this morning, crafting the first scene in my skateboarder story, introducing the main character, establishing his name, his interests, and the secrets he keeps to himself.
As I said in yesterday’s post, I’ve known more than a few skaters over the years, and I would not characterize them as particularly sensitive young men. Theirs is a competitive, all-male subculture where you don’t let your feelings show. Visit a skateboard park sometime and you’ll see what I mean. Better yet, rent the film video, Paranoid Park, directed by Gus Van Sant. You’ll learn more than you want to about skaters.
It’s warm and sunny here this evening. I took a run in the Greunewald about an hour ago and it was perfect: shady and cool, with the smell of pine needles scenting the air.
My friends in Wedding are having me for dinner tonight, so I’m off to the bus, then the subway, in just a few minutes. Have a nice Thursday, everyone.
