Next time you feel the urge to drop a few dollars in a Salvation Army bell-ringer’s bucket, please consider the following statement a gay man made about his experience with the Salvation Army:
“When a former boyfriend and I were homeless, the Salvation Army refused to help us unless we broke up and left the ‘sinful homosexual lifestyle’ behind. We slept on the street and they didn’t help when we declined to break up at their insistence. I’ve seen the discrimination the Salvation Army preaches first hand.”
Readers, this isn’t the first I’ve heard of this. The Salvation Army is operated by religious zealots who are fiercely anti-gay. It is not a charitable organization. I stopped giving them money or used items long ago, because I’d met a few gay men who’d experienced this sort of discrimination when they sought help from Salvation Army.
There are plenty of worthwhile charities out there who deserve your support. The Salvation Army’s not one of them. Why support an organization that considers you a second class citizen?
Okay, I’ll get off my soap box now. I hope everyone’s Tuesday is going well.
