Yesterday, I heard from Jerome, a young gay man who has wrestled for his high school all four years. Here’s what he had to say:
“I find it kinda funny what curiosity brings you to.
“I’m a wrestler in California, and I just finished my senior season with a 34-6 record and captain status. I’ve been out since freshman year, and quite frankly, I don’t think its had any effect on my high school wrestling career. I’ve been featured in the school news paper and am also the president of the GSA (Gay-Straight Alliance), so most everybody knows I’m gay. And really… everyones fine with it. My wrestling buddies joke around like they would with every other hetero-man, differing only slightly in the fact that they make more dick jokes Haha.
“But seriously, when it comes down to it, I think its all about the attitude that someone has.
“I’ve never let my sexuality interfere with my ability to wrestle and visa versa.
“I can say without fear that I love my teammates, coaches, and boyfriend.”
Thanks, Jerome, for contacting me and sharing your thoughts and experience in the high school wrestling scene. You inspire me. And I’m sure your comments will inspire many gay wrestlers who are struggling with their sexual orientation.
In case anyone doubts Jerome is for real, he gave me a link to his YouTube channel and I checked it out. Not only is Jerome articulate and honest, he’s also mucho handsome. I wish I could attend one of his matches; I’m sure he looks great in a singlet!
It’s yet another beautiful day in west central Florida: sunny, about 72 degrees, with only a light breeze. My boyfriend’s off work today, and I’m looking forward to spending time with him.
This afternoon, we’ll take a walk on the beach, to check out all the sexy Spring Breakers. Then we’ll watch the SEC basketball championship final between Florida and Kentucky. Our fridge is stocked with beer and wine and all our favorite snacks for watching sports.
My favorite UF player, Chandler Parsons (that’s his photo at left) , will be a big factor in the game, as always. He’s so cute, and he’s such a fine athlete. The game’s at one P.M. EDST. Tune in and check it out. You won’t be sorry. Go Gators!
Today is one of those days when I realize I’m the luckiest man in the world. My health is great, I have a wonderful boyfriend, I live in a beautiful place and I have many close friends. What more could I ask for? Wherever you are, I hope the sun is shining. Enjoy your Sunday, friends.
